Free Online File Storage / Backup Services
Free Online File Storage or Cloud Storage , as it is called technically, is becoming a trend for storing files online as backup. Here, we compare 4 free online file storage services - Dropbox, Ubuntu One, Google Drive and Microsoft SkyDrive.
Ubuntu One is Ubuntu's own online file backup service meant to provide all PC users free online backup services. Ubuntu one provides a host of functionalities that others fail to.
Google Drive, a free online file backup service, another try from Google to expand its territory. Unfortunately i could not get to test its full functionality since Linux Application has not been released yet.
Dropbox :
Dropbox, the hotshot in the file backup section is many users' favourite as it supports all the major operating systems for both PCs and mobiles. It provides us with a free storage space of 2 GB and you can increase it upto 16 GB with referrals.
Pros :
- Works with all major OSs - Windows, Linux, Mac, Android, iOS, Windows Phone
- Folders outside of main backup folder can be backed up
Cons :
- Only 2 GB is provided ( others provide 5 GB )
- No automatic scheduling option
Ubuntu One :
Ubuntu One is Ubuntu's own online file backup service meant to provide all PC users free online backup services. Ubuntu one provides a host of functionalities that others fail to.
Pros :
- 5 GB of free storage
- Scheduled backups
- Folders outside of main backup folder can be backed up
- Works with Windows, Linux, iOS and Android devices
Cons:
- No native app for Mac and Windows Phone
Google Drive :
Google Drive, a free online file backup service, another try from Google to expand its territory. Unfortunately i could not get to test its full functionality since Linux Application has not been released yet.
Pros :
- 5 GB Free Storage
- Supports online File Editing for specific file types
- Online File Creation and Editing
- Supports Windows/Mac/Android/iOS
- Undo File Changes - Allows us to go back undoing the changes made to the file ( for 30 days )
Cons :
- No native app for Linux
- No scheduling of Sync
Sky Drive :
Sky Drive is a Microsoft's try to drive the Windows' users into saving their files online. I was not able to test this one completely because there is no native application for Linux.Pros :
- 7 GB Free Storage
- Online File Editing for Word, Excel, Powerpoint and OneNote files.
- Chat with Facebook friends from Skydrive page
- Metro Style User Interface. Neat & Clean
- Apps fro Windows, Mac, Windows Phone, iOS and Android
Cons :
- No native app for Linux.
